Programme Note

William Lloyd Webber’s Lento for Strings is a comparatively early work composed in 1939. During its short (six minutes) timespan it explores an intricate, intensely chromatic world of densely-textured string writing reminiscent of late Richard Strauss or early Schoenberg. A fascinating discovery.

Reviews

Lento is brooding and intense; its intricate and hyper-expressive harmonies echo late Mahler or early Schoenberg...
