Programme Note

First produced in May 1956 by the Ballet der Lage Landen (Ballet of the Low Countries) in Amsterdam.
First British production by the London Festival Ballet in November 1957 in Manchester.
First performed in London in July 1958.
First concert performance of the music by Sir Thomas Beecham with the RPO at the Royal Festival Hall in November 1959.
After the Ballet der Lage Landen went out of existence it was taken up by the National Ballet of Holland.
When Festival Ballet visited Buenos Aires, it was such a success that it was taken up by the company at Teatro Colon who are still performing it.
It has subsequently been produced by the PACT ballet in South Africa, the Royal Iranian Ballet, West Deutsche Rundfunk, Japanese Television, the National Ballet of Washington D.C. and most recently (1981) by the New Zealand Ballet.
