Programme Note

DELPHINE

Although DELPHINE does not set out specifically to depict the ancient ruined City of Delphi, the title makes an oblique reference to that religious centre of the ancient Greek world. The piece acquired its title when the composition was already finished: the music seemed to reflect something of my excitement and awe on first visiting Delphi.

DELPHINE was commissioned by Goldsmiths' College with funds provided by the Greater London Arts Association; it is dedicated to my mother.

The first performance was given on 28 June 1980 by the Music Department of the University of London Goldsmiths' College.
