(Moel Bryn)- Chester Music Ltd (World)
Commissioned by the Malvern Hills Conservators to mark their centenary in 1984. The first performances was given in the Winter Gardens, Malvern, by the Orchestra da Camera conducted by Neil Page.
Programme Note
MOEL BRYN means 'bare hill' and is generally taken as the derivation for the name 'Malvern'.
The work, which is scored for solo string quartet and string orchestra, is entirely based on the interval of the minor third, which interval is also a prominent feature of the folk-song 'My bonny bonny boy' to which many shadowy references are made during the piece, particularly in the slower sections. After a very brief misty introduction, the work falls into five main sections, the second and fourth of which are slow.
