Programme Note

The music of this short orchestral piece is taken from Berners’ one-act comic opera Le Carosse du Saint-Sacrement, first performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 1924. Although French critics disliked the opera, it was well received by The Times as well as by the public – Berners spent several minutes on stage acknowledging applause after the first performance. However, the opera never transferred to London. Perhaps not wanting to see his music go to waste, Berners fashioned the Caprice Péruvien from parts of the opera score, with help from Constant Lambert.

Suitable as a stand-alone concert piece, the Caprice Péruvien can also be played as a prelude, or overture, to Le Carosse du Saint-Sacrement itself.
