John McCabe at the Osaka International Film Festival
John McCabe will be making his first visit to Japan in November this year, when his Piano Quintet The Woman by the Sea is premiered by Yoshiko Endo and the Rubio Quartet, at the Dai-ichi Seimei Hall, Tokyo on November 13th, to be followed by a second performance on November 15th at the Inuyama-shi Hall, Nagoy.The Woman by the Sea will then be programmed in conjunction with the Osaka International Film Festival, at the Sho Hall, on November 16th. Following this concert there will be a screening of the 1954 film which originally inspired the quintet, Sansho Dayu, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. John McCabe will be talking to audiences about his long interest in the cinema as an art-form, his thoughts on this film in particular and the inspiration he received from it.

The Woman by the Sea received its world premiere on September 12 2001 at the Wigmore Hall with Yoshiko Endo and the Rubio Quartet as part of the international festival JAPAN 2001. John McCabe will be the soloist at a performance in Gent, Belgium, scheduled for December 7th . The Woman by the Sea was commissioned by Peter Mallett, of ArtSPACE , and is dedicated to the cause of cancer research.
