Capping the celebrations of his 60th birthday year, conductor, composer, educator and American music advocate Michael Tilson Thomas has been named Gramophone Artist of the Year for 2005. Editor James Jolly notes, “During his ten years at the helm of the San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas has created a dynamic and imaginative focus for symphonic music...A skillful blend of traditional repertoire, contemporary music and clever programming has drawn new audiences into the concert hall.” The Award is chosen by the magazine’s readers from a select editors’ list.
