"I can reasonably hope those who have seen the opera of The Handmaid’s Tale will be interested in reading this book, likewise those who haven’t seen the opera but have read the novel and are curious to know how you turn it into viable music drama.
But they’re the easy fish. The readers I’d be most pleased to hook would be those who have neither seen the opera nor read the novel but enjoy music and theatre and gossip and food. To that end I have made this Diary as much autobiographical as operatical – after all I’m an actor by trade and no normal actor can seriously be expected to resist the chance to keep the world fully informed about himself."
