At the BBC Proms on August 16, clarinettist and conductor Martin Fröst and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra will premiere Helix by Jacob Mühlrad.
The work for chamber orchestra and clarinet draws on two musical traditions: raga and Klezmer. Raised in the tradition of Jewish liturgical song, Mühlrad brings this influence into his compositional language. In Helix, the soloist assumes the role of a preacher, guiding the orchestra towards a climactic peak before the music collapses, clearing space for the soloist to emerge once again.
Helix was commissioned by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and BBC Radio 3. The Swedish premiere will take place on August 28 at Berwaldhallen, Stockholm.
