On Saturday August 8, the Turku Summer Festival will present the Finnish premiere of Kjartan Sveinsson’s work Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen, performed by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra and the Turku Conservatory Chamber Choir, conducted by Kaapo Ijas.

This opera in four acts, which can be performed in both its original theatrical version or in a traditional concert version, was conceived by composer Kjartan Sveinsson and multidisciplinary artist Ragnar Kjartansson. It was commissioned by and originally performed in Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg Platz, Berlin. The work was inspired by the four-volume novel World Light by Icelandic Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness (1902-1998) that revolves around the incurable longing for beauty and its catastrophic consequences.

In the original theatrical production of Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen there were no soloists on the stage - Ragnar Kjartansson created theatrical sets for the four separate acts, each rooted in German romantic clichés. The sets created a non-narrative of pure-hearted banality, with the choir and orchestra performing Sveinsson’s beautifully soothing, reflective and uplifting score from within the orchestral pit.
