Dacapo Records has released Rare Piano Works by Per Nørgård, featuring pianist Christina Bjørkøe. This digital release presents a selection of exceptionally rare works and serves as a precursor to the complete recording of Nørgård’s piano music, scheduled for release in early 2027.
The release contains works from across Nørgård’s career: Stjerne‑barcarole (1995), Magyar Danyl Nota (2005), Maj på vej (2007), Waterways (2008–09), and the early Partita Severa (1951).
Founded on the Nordic tradition of Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius, Per Nørgård’s formative years were shaped by the influence and guidance of Vagn Holmboe. Holmboe sparked a lifelong fascination with musical metamorphosis in Per Nørgård. Christina Bjørkøe has dedicated much of her extensive discography to Danish composers.
Shortly before Per Nørgård’s passing, Christina Bjørkøe performed Partita Severa privately for him in April 2025. Partita Severa was written as a gift for Vagn Holmboe and his wife, Meta, while Star Barcarole offers a rare glimpse into Nørgård’s inspiration from poetic rock music. Other works on the album reflect how Nørgård was influenced by friends, colleagues, his country, and nature.
