A new Missa Brevis for unaccompanied mixed chorus by Cheryl Frances-Hoad will be given its first outing as part of a Cathedral Eucharist service at Wells Cathedral at 10.30am on Sunday May 10 2026.

Wells Cathedral Choir will perform the work, conducted by their Director of Music, Timothy Parsons, as part of the Sound of Wells Festival 2026.

The eleven-minute mass was commissioned by Cathedral Commissions of Wells Cathedral.

"I am thrilled that Wells Cathedral has enabled me to write my first mass setting, as I've long felt that this is a gap in my choral output," says Cheryl Frances-Hoad. "When writing, I looked to settings such as Lennox Berkeley's as a model, and although I very much had Wells Cathedral Choir in mind whilst writing, I hope this concise setting, in four parts throughout, will be of use to many other places of worship."

Cheryl Frances-Hoad will also host a Composers' Masterclass in the afternoon of Sunday May 10.
