On Thursday March 5, the Philharmonia Orchestra and soloist Mark van der Wiel will give the world premiere of a new concerto for clarinet and orchestra, Rainbow by Jonathan Dove.
Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali will conduct the performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall, in a programme of works that celebrates the clarinet, from Copland to Gershwin.
Following on from his concertos Stargazer and In Northern Lights, this is Dove’s third concerto to take inspiration from the skies. In Rainbow, the solo clarinet traces a great arc in the sky, responding to a rainbow’s shape and colours, and the various moods they evoke.
Rainbow celebrates the virtuosity and lyricism of Mark Van der Wiel, former principal clarinet of the Philharmonia Orchestra, to whom it is dedicated. It was commissioned by Mark van der Wiel and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
