Austrian composer Richard Dünser and the Silver-Garburg Piano Duo have a long history of collaborations. The new Concerto for Piano (four hands) and Orchestra “Werther”, an arrangement of Johannes Brahm’s Piano Quartet No. 3, op. 60, is the latest work he has composed specifically for the duo, who will present the world premiere on March 6 with Bodensee-Philharmonie and Sieva Borzak in Konstanz.
The work captures the unhappy love of Johannes Brahms for Clara Schumann and from correspondence with his publisher it can be seen that he alludes to Goethe’s “Werther”. Therefore, Richard Dünser has chosen the Subtitle “Werther”.
Speaking about the Concerto, the composer says:
“… the concertante element bubbling under the surface and its unleashing appealed to me; the musical content, the compositional richness and the density of the movement create a concerto with a symphonic Brahms sound through the orchestration for orchestra.”
The two performances in Konstanz are followed by the Austrian premiere on March 13 in Klagenfurt and the Spanish premiere, performed by Silver-Garburg Piano Duo and Orquestra de València, on April 10 in València.
