The BBC Symphony Orchestra present Icelandic Soundworlds - and evening of music as part of the BBC's 'Icelandic Chill' themed Total Immersion day on February 22. The concert features the World Premiere of Ólafur Arnald's new work for orchestra, Another Kind of Peace. Christian Karlsen will conduct the concert which also features UK premieres of music by Daníel Bjarnason, Bára Gísladóttir and Valgeir Sigurðsson
‘We cannot control what happens to us, but we can control how we react to the things that life confronts us with’, said Ólafur Arnalds about the theme of his last solo album Some Kind of Peace. What does it mean to be alive? How much courage does it need to stay vulnerable? These questions direct the artist’s view from the chaotic outside world towards the inner world. It was his most personal album and the focus on inner contemplation was captured by music of fragility and quiet beauty.
Now Ólafur has revisited this album together with his composer friend Viktor Orri Árnason in order to create an orchestral suite based on the album. The result is mythical and magical at the same time. Set for a symphonic orchestra and it’s acoustic instruments it is a radical departure from the electronic and partly vocal original album. It is a journey into a unique immersive soundscape, a beautiful and haunting experience.
