Dacapo Records releases two new albums in January 2026 featuring first recordings of concertos by Bent Sørensen, Søren Nils Eichberg and Karsten Fundal.
The new release 'Viola Concertos' performed by soloist Rafaell Altino with the Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pierre Bleuse features concertos by Karsten Fundal and Søren Nils Eichberg.
Viola Concerto by Karsten Fundal has the heading : ‘Lysende mørke / Mørknende lys’ (‘Lightened Darkness / Darkened Light’) and ‘Vigende genkald’ (‘Dwindling Recall’), pointing to a music that plays with shifting perspective and memory. Eichberg’s concerto Charybdis takes its point of departure in the mythic maelstrom: a terrifying and magnetic force that in the composer’s own words, reflects “our attraction to the dangerous and the unknown” and the moment where you “don’t even WANT… to escape anymore.”
The second January release is of piano works by Bent Sørensen performed by Katrine Gislinge, pairing the intimate piano work 12 Nocturnes with La sera estatica, his third piano concerto performed by Copenhagen Phil conducted by John Storgårds. Written during the Covid lockdown, the concerto grew out of daily work in the studio and private concerts at home, where Gislinge played Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Mozart and Sørensen’s own music. Sørensen describes how those evenings left traces in the score: “There are quotes and short glimpses of other composers and works, but it’s painted over and melted together with my music”.
Sørensen has long been drawn to the combination of piano and night, and as he puts it:
There is something about the combination of piano and night. I have always been fascinated by the sound of a piano from far away, and more than once, walking through the darkened city in the evening or at night, I have stopped, caught by the sound of a piano drifting out of a window. The most beautiful night sound, mysterious and enigmatic in a way that cannot be explained.
