Ennio Morricone’s Partenope — Long-Lost Opera Premieres at Teatro di San Carlo
Ennio Morricone

On December 12, 2025, Naples’ historic Teatro di San Carlo presents the long-awaited world premiere of Partenope, the only opera by Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone. Composed in 1995 with a libretto by Guido Barbieri and Sandro Cappelletto, Partenope’s belated debut marks a major milestone in Morricone’s artistic legacy, finally bringing his operatic voice to the stage.

This one-act opera is based on the Greek myth of the siren Partenope, who washed ashore in southern Italy. The first settlement on the site of her tomb was named Parthenope, known today as Naples. Morricone’s unique orchestration omits violins and incorporates winds, harps, percussion and local folk instruments, blending mythic resonance with vivid sonic textures.

Directed by Vanessa Beecroft and conducted by Riccardo Frizza, the production opens to enthusiastic audiences as part of Naples’ 2,500th anniversary celebrations. The premiere offers a rare opportunity to experience a hidden facet of Morricone’s creative range, broadening appreciation of his contributions beyond his iconic film scores.
