The Last Night of the Proms is a world-famous event which marks the end of each year's BBC Proms. This year at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday September 13 the programme includes a new work for chorus and orchestra by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman.
Portman has set an original text by long-time collaborator Nick Drake for The Gathering Tree, a new work for chorus and orchestra.
"The Gathering Tree is about who we are at our best, celebrating how we come together", says Rachel Portman. "Nick Drake’s words speak to what we share, and what we hold dear. I set out to write a work that communicates the shared feeling of singing together on the unique occasion that is the LNOTP."
The Gathering Tree was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and will be performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Chorus and BBC Singers, conducted by Elim Chan.
Broadcast live from 19:00 on BBC Two (first half) and BBC One (second half), and on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds
