This piece reflects upon the forces in life that hold and enclose us, those vast similitudes that connect us and remind us we are a part of something much larger than our daily human struggles might allow us to perceive.

On Sunday, March 2, The Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) premieres Marmoris, a new orchestral work by Sarah Kirkland Snider. Led by conductor Jayce Ogren, MYSO is an ensemble of outstanding high school musicians selected through a competitive audition process. A livestream of the concert will be hosted on the University of Michigan website at 4pm EST.

Commissioned by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance and the Monterey Symphony, Marmoris is an 11-minute impressionistic orchestral tone poem, inspired by the sea and the fluid motion of ocean currents. The title is derived from an ancient Latin word meaning “the shimmering surface of the sea.”

Snider draws a poetic connection between the ocean and the orchestra, describing both as “living, breathing entities consisting of myriad unique lifeforms...pulsing, swaying, and churning.” Through lush harmonies and dynamic textures, Marmoris explores the vastness and interconnectedness of these forces, offering a reminder that we are part of something far greater than the struggles our daily lives suggest.
