Through its rhythm and structure, music grants us a lens to measure and interpret the passage of moments while hinting at the boundlessness of temporal scales beyond human grasp.

Heliopause, a new work for ensemble by Jacob Mühlrad, will premiere at Festival Présences in Paris with ensemble Linea, conducted by Jean-Philippe Wurtz on February 9.

The work deals with how we can perceive time through music. “A single note resonates for milliseconds, yet when woven into harmony, rhythm, and melody, it creates an expansive temporal experience”, says Mühlrad. He compares this to life itself that may seem short compared to the timescales of the universe, but is able to contain depths and meaning, stretching it beyond its time.

Heliopause was commissioned by Radio France.
