The shortlist of this year’s BBC Music Magazine Awards have been announced, celebrating the best classical music recordings of the past year. Wise Music Group is delighted that The Anvil, a Delphian Records recording of two important works by Emily Howard, The Anvil and Elliptics, has been nominated in the Premiere Award category.
Emily Howard is one of the UK ‘s most exciting and strikingly individual composers, writing music that is notable for its expansive orchestral textures, imaginative use of instrumental colour, and powerful use of text. Her works often take their inspiration from the shapes, structures, and phenomena of the natural world, as well as from literature, politics, and the visual arts.
The Anvil, a spectacular work scored for a large orchestra and chorus about suffrage and suffering, was premiered at the Manchester International Festival in 2019 and marked the bicentenary of the Peterloo Massacre. Elliptics is a meditation on love and death, and what we hope will survive. Both works on this superb recording set Howard’s music to texts by poet Michael Symmons Roberts.
Please do support this fantastic recording by voting for it here. Voting will close at midnight on Friday February 28, with the Awards taking place at Kings Place on Wednesday April 23.
