On May 18 the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, cellist Laura van der Heijden and Chief Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth draw to a close their 2022/23 Glasgow Series with the world premiere of the Cello Concerto by Cheryl Frances-Hoad from Glasgow’s City Halls.

Commissioned by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the 20-minute three movement work surges with joyous feeling, taking inspiration from three contrasting aspects of the natural world: the imaginary flight of a swift; phytoplankton (algae) in the ocean; and volcanoes.

The concerto is also inspired by cellist Laura van der Heijden and Frances-Hoad’s desire to write a piece that is both rewarding to play and listen to. With soaring melodies, a slow movement that gives the soloist the opportunity to fully communicate their musicianship, and a finale that exuberantly showcases the soloists virtuosity, the cello concerto is a barnstorming new work for cello and large orchestra.
