As part of her multi-season residency with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Gabriela Lena Frank has composed a companion piece to Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Pachamama Meets an Ode. Scored for chorus and orchestra with text by the composer, the piece receives its long-awaited world premiere February 21, 2022 at Carnegie Hall, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin leading the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir. Additional performances will conclude the orchestra’s Philadelphia season at Verizon Hall, June 3-5, 2022.

Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin discusses Frank and her music

Pachamama Meets an Ode, commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, imagines a meeting between Beethoven and his Peruvian contemporaries from the Cusco School of Painters. Channeling her own identity and activist mindset, Frank emphasizes the impact of colonialism and the Industrial Revolution across space, time, land, and sea. In doing so, she has produced a timely, unique meditation on the legacy of Ludwig van Beethoven and his iconic “Ode to Joy.”
