On February 11, Mari the most recent work for orchestra by Bryce Dessner will be have its UK premiere from London’s Barbican Hall with the BBC SO under Semyon Bychkov, to whom the piece is dedicated. The concert is part of the celebrations of the BBC centenary in 2022.

Dessner wrote the piece during the pandemic, when orchestras fell silent, and the musicians and audiences stayed home. This backdrop impacts upon the piece along with references to two great composers – Dvořák and Mahler. The work is named after the Basque goddess of the forest, Mari. Bachtrack said of the piece “the one-movement orchestral piece Mari is a beauty, a neoclassical stroll through the forests of French Basque country.”
