Ned Kelly , the chamber opera by Australian-British composer Luke Styles and librettist Peter Goldsworthy, has been nominated in the 2020 Art Music Awards for Dramatic Work of the Year. Having premiered at the 2019 Perth Festival to sold-out crowds, commissioned by Lost and Found Opera, Ned Kelly re-examines the legend of the Australian bushranger with lesser-known extraordinary facts about his politics, loves and quirks – including cross-dressing, bee-keeping and opium-smoking. Steve Dow from The Guardian praised the opera as “a solid, gripping production”, commending Styles’ Ned Kelly as “a transcendent stage figure, a deeper wellspring of flawed Australian masculinity – hero, myth or otherwise."
The 2020 Art Music Awards will take place online next Tuesday night, 8th September, where the Award’s recipient will be announced.
