The Bronx Opera Company will perform the New York Premiere of Kirke Mechem's operatic comic revelation, The Rivals (2002), at the Hunter College Kaye Playhouse January 18 & 19. Based loosely on Richard Brinsley Sheridan's play of the same name, this Newport, Rhode Island story of mistaken identities, outrageously confused lovers, and the hilariously mangled English of Mrs. Malaprop brings music and character together at a rollicking pace sure to keep audiences engaged and laughing.

The Rivals is Mechem's second comic opera since the great success of Tartuffe (1980) and brings to the table his light-hearted witty handling of American musical idioms including ragtime, music hall songs, and band shell concerts.

Irresistible . . . had the audience standing on their feet.

Absolute perfection. . . One of the finest pieces of music theater I’ve seen in some time — on any stage.

Rarely have words fit music so well. . . beautiful and jaunty tunes that align with plot and character.
