Ever the adventurer in both his music and travels, John Corigliano heads to Shanghai, China this Spring for the Asian premiere of his newest orchestral work One Sweet Morning. Co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, One Sweet Morning was first heard in New York in September 2011 with soloist Stephanie Blythe, conducted by Alan Gilbert. On May 26 the Shanghai Symphony with mezzo Sasha Cooke and Chinese-American conductor Lan Shui perform this powerful orchestral song cycle, which reflects upon the timeless anguishes of war and the eternal hope for a new morning of peace.While in Shanghai, Corigliano will also attend a concert of his chamber music on May 27, performed by players from the Shanghai Symphony, and spend a day at the Shanghai Conservatory for a master class and lecture on his compositional process.
Corigliano reflected: “It will be my second trip to China — the first to Beijing where the Red Violin Chaconne was played by the China Philharmonic Orchestra. I lectured at the university and found, to my astonishment, that a young woman was doing her doctoral thesis on my 2nd Symphony. And although the piece had not yet been published or recorded, she, through the marvels of the internet, had both a recording and score. I was immensely flattered by her choice of topic, and marveled at her ingenuity. I’m very grateful that the Shanghai Symphony has offered me this opportunity to return to China and to share my music with their great orchestra and wonderful city. My last trip was unforgettable, as I am sure this new one will be."
