Happy 80th Mr. Nørgård!

Photo by Tine HardenThe 80th birthday of Danish composer Per Nørgård is too significant an event to go unnoticed by music festivals this season, many of whom are gearing up to celebrate the influential Dane.

On the bill at Bergen International Festival running May 23 - June 6 are two concerts showcasing works by Nørgård, including his acclaimed violin concerto Borderlines, performed by violinist Peter Herresthal with strings from the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.

The same set of performers is taking Borderlines on the road, also appearing at the Athelas New Music Festival in Copenhagen, Denmark May 18 - 25. The piece has received continuous praise since surfacing in recorded form earlier this year, earning the much-coveted accolade IRR OUTSTANDING from International Record Review.

The programme at this year’s Vale of Glamorgan Festival of Music running May 1 - 11 is scheduled to include several Nørgård works, notably his Symphony No. 2 – his first symphonic piece structured entirely around the infinity series – in a rendition by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Other events include the London Philharmonic Orchestra programming Nørgård’s seminal piece Voyage into the Golden Screen for a concert on June 12, while the following day, in Manchester, the RNCM New Ensemble takes on his major ensemble work Night-Symphonies, Day Breaks and other selections.
