Tarik O'Regan: Opera Premiere | New Recordings | New Works
Heart of Darkness is based on Joseph Conrad’s book of the same name, which is widely regarded as one of the finest novels of the twentieth century. Set in Central Africa at the height of European colonialism, this powerful tale explores themes of exploitation and brutality in the oppressive atmosphere of the equatorial rainforest as Marlow, a sea captain, tells the tale of his journey upriver in the equatorial forest to find Kurtz, the once idealistic ivory trader who is rumoured to have developed his remote station into a barbaric fiefdom. All that happens in Conrad’s seminal novel, which heralded the 20th century, still goes on in the world’s many hearts of darkness today. Though the theatres of human degradation migrate from place to place, among nations and continents, they continue to conform to the old recipes.
