New Chamber Opera by Tarik O’Regan

A new chamber opera by Tarik O’Regan, Heart of Darkness, will receive its world premiere on 1 November 2011 at the Linbury Studio Theatre at London’s Royal Opera House. Based on Joseph Conrad’s great novel, O’Regan matches his distinctive musical voice with a libretto by Tom Philips and production by Edward Dick. This powerful one-act opera explores themes of obsession and brutality in the oppressive atmosphere of the African Congo, as the riverboat captain Marlow searches for a notorious ivory trader. For its first visit to the Royal Opera House, Opera East performs with Chroma, conducted by Opera East’s Artistic Director, Oliver Gooch. Developed in association with the ROH2 Opera Genesis initiative, this contemporary interpretation of a great work of literature is a powerful new addition to contemporary opera and a highlight of the Linbury Season.

Performance dates: 1,2,4,5 November 2011.
