Schubert rediscovered
28th March 2010
In 1820 Franz Schubert worked on a large-scale romantic opera based on the drama Sakontala by the classical Indian poet Kalidasa, the so-called Indian Homer. Due to Schubert's early death this work remained a fragment. Recently Karl Aage Rasmussen reviewed all the existing and newly discovered music and libretto fragments and formed a two-act opera by empathizing with Schubert's style and intentions.
A complete recording of Sakontala was released in 2008 on the Carus label.
