Naxos released two discs in January featuring G. Schirmer composers: Roy Harris's Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6, and another featuring concerti by Avner Dorman. Harris's disc is currently the Naxos "Disc of the Month," and features conductor Marin Alsop leading the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Both Harris's Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6 were composed against the backdrop of World War II, and contain strong nationalistic references. Symphony No. 5 is dedicated to the enduring spirit of the Russian people, and Symphony No. 6, subtitled 'Gettysburg,' uses the Civil War and the Gettysburg Address as the basis for its programmatic narrative.
