Rodríguez: Taking Time

San Antonio's SOLI Chamber Ensemble sets its clock to the premiere hour on March 16 and 17 with a quartet commissioned from Robert X. Rodríguez, Música, por un tiempo.

Rodríguez mixes material from Henry Purcell's song "Music, for a while" with the four instruments of Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and blends with a rumba.

While Messiaen’s quartet evokes an eternal state, Música, por un tiempo follows Dryden’s text for the Purcell song and "celebrates individual moments of our fleeting, Earthly time, as those moments are intensified through music," notes Rodríguez.

Music, for a while doth all our cares beguile,
Wond’ring how your pains were eased and disdaining to be pleased…
