Joan Tower celebrates 70 years with a concert on 6 September (her birthday) at New York City's Merkin Concert Hall. The American Brass Quintet, the Kalichstein-Laredo- Robinson Trio, violist Paul Neubauer, pianists Blair McMillen and James Tocco, and members of eighth blackbird perform her music on the concert's first half. After intermission, performers become composers with original birthday tributes. On 15 September, the Da Capo Chamber Players present an all-Tower evening at Merkin. She was a founding member of the ensemble.
In other news, The Miami String Quartet premiered Tower's fourth quartet, Angels, at New Mexico's Music From Angel Fire on the last day of August; during September and October, the Cassatt String Quartet presents a cycle of Tower's earlier quartets at New York's Symphony Space.
