Carter: Centenary Celebration

Carter: Centenary Celebration
The New Year ushers in the 100th-birthday concerts for the august composer Elliott Carter.

Inaugurating the centenary in the US at Symphony Space in New York City, pianist Ursula Oppens, a long proponent of Carter's music, offers the composer's complete piano music, including Night Fantasies. The Juilliard School honors Carter as part of their FOCUS! 2008 festival from 25 January through 2 February, including concerts by the Juilliard Orchestra under the batons of James Levine and Pierre Boulez. Under the auspices of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Pacifica String Quartet will give a rare performance of Carter's five string quartets on 30 January.

The Carter Centenary will continue throughout the 2008-09 season in the US, Europe and Asia with major focuses by Ensemble Intercontemporain, Carnegie Hall, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, including their summer season at Tanglewood, to name only a few.
