The Erotic and the Athletic

The Erotic and the Athletic
On December 6 at the Barbican Centre, the Michael Nyman Band’s first London concert in three years includes premieres of two major works.

Nyman’s I Sonetti Lussoriosi , for soprano and orchestra was commissioned by the Venice Biennale, and sets erotic texts by Italian Renaissance poet Pietro Aretino. A furore surrounded a performance of the work in Rome earlier this year, when the texts were deemed too obscene to be printed in the programme. This Barbican date sees the world premiere of a new version for soprano (Marie Angel) and the Michael Nyman Band, and runs in conjunction with the Barbican’s “Seduced” exhibition of erotic art.

50,000 pairs of feet can’t be wrong , receiving its London premiere, was commissioned by the Cultural Programme of the Great North Run, and follows the emotional and physical journey of a runner along the 13 miles of a half-marathon. The performance will be accompanied by a specially made video by award-winning digital design studio moShine.

The concert will also include a sequence of works based on Mozart “to celebrate the 251st anniversary of his birth”.
