Tower: A Newborn in La Jolla

Tower: A Newborn in La Jolla
"Joan Tower is such a fabulous composer." SummerFest (La Jolla) violinist and music director Cho-Liang Lin wastes no time in telling us what he thinks of Tower’s music, as he embarks on the upcoming 18 August world premiere of her chamber work Trio La Jolla.

Tower is no stranger to the La Jolla Music Society — in 2000, SummerFest commissioned her earlier trio, Big Sky. This year, she returns as composer-in-residence. "Trio La Jolla," Tower explains, "was written for my friend Jimmy Lin — violinist extraordinaire...It is a work that tries to negotiate different paths of emotional extremes — going from soft tender lyricism to more aggressive rhythmic patterns of wild dances. I am very much looking forward to working with Jimmy, André, and Gary on this newborn."

Co-commissioned with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Virginia Arts Festival, Trio La Jolla features Lin joining pianist André-Michel Schub and cellist Gary Hoffman for the performance.Trio La Jolla   18'
