New John McCabe CD

New John McCabe CD
A new CD on the Dutton Epoch label from the Fibonacci Sequence includes four McCabe works. "The bold opening of the Concerto for Piano and Wind Quintet on fortissimo wind in unison brings thriling attack, leading to a very approchable work built on sharply rhythmic, often angular material… The Musica Notturna has a comparable sharpness in exploiting the changing moods and aspects of a great city at night, while the third of these works dates from much more recently, Fauvel's Rondeaux of 1995. As a satellite work to McCabe's full-length ballet, Edward II, its eight sections, like the ballet, evoke sharply contrasted moods and emotions, with court entertainment set in the corrupt world of conspiracy and power-mania. Postcards for wind quintet, dating from 1997, is a set of eight striking miniatures, including a bossa nova and a fugato." Edward Greenfield, The Guardian, 4 April 2003.
