Composer Note:
I began Scherzo in 1987 as a Piano Sonata which was commissioned jointly by Peter Serkin and the Schubert Club of St. Paul, Minnesota. Work on the piece was set aside until this year (1989) when I felt that the music I had already composed was better suited to a shorter form. As I was composing Scherzo, however, I was inspired to make it the first of a group of four.
