OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY is a setting for soprano, orchestra and chorus of a poem by Paz. Paz's poem is the goddess herself singing in the first person, and is full of sensuality and violence, and sexual, animal and landscape imagery. Like the poem, Catán's setting is through-composed [with] beautiful harmonies. This is beautiful music. This is an attractive disc, hopefully a harbinger of more from Catán from Naxos.
