George Antheil's heyday coincided with musical Europe's fascination with what Germans called "die Jazzmusik," but in Antheil's FIRST PIANO CONCERTO you have to keep a sharp ear out for anything immediately recognizable as true jazz influence of the early 1920s. Lengthy passages completely dispense with tonality, and a strong motoric drive recalls Antheil's most celebrated succès de scandale, the BALLET MÉCANIQUE. Michael Rische made the work well worth hearing.
