Leaf from leaf Christ knows was given its first performance by the Choir of Wells Cathedral, James Kealey (organ) and Matthew Owens (conductor), during the festival new music wells 76–16, on Thursday 20th October 2016. It was commissioned by Cathedral Commissions of Wells Cathedral with the generous support of private donors.

Using repeated thirds with octave drops in the organ, Judith Weir vividly illustrates Christina Rossetti’s depiction of Christ knowing ‘leaf from leaf’ and especially counting ‘drop by drop’ and numbering ‘grain by grain’, before an impassioned ‘Lord, I lift to thee in peace what is and what shall be’. Weir’s creative imagination results in an anthem that sounds like no other that I know.
