Biography

Johannes Motschmann works across a broad musical spectrum that includes classical composition, electronic music, and pop-influenced formats. He studied composition with Wolfgang Rihm, Jörg Herchet, and Hanspeter Kyburz, as well as piano, music theory, and electronic music. His formal background informs a practice that often moves between concert hall traditions and contemporary sound aesthetics.

His works have been interpreted by established ensembles and orchestras such as Ensemble Modern, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the NDR Radio Philharmonic, SWR Symphony Orchestra, Scharoun Ensemble, Ensemble Resonanz, the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. In addition, his compositions are performed at both classical and cross-genre festivals, including the Salzburger Festspiele, Klangspuren Schwaz, Beethovenfest Bonn, La Folle Journée, Karneval der Kulturen, Reeperbahn Festival, and Yellow Lounge at Berghain.

Motschmann has received commissions from a number of festivals and institutions, among them the Beethovenfest Bonn, Heidelberger Frühling, Davos Festival, AlpenKLASSIK, and the Biennale für Moderne Musik Frankfurt Rhein Main. He is currently a fellow at the SWR Experimentalstudio in Freiburg, where he is conducting research on the relationship between artificial intelligence and composition.
