Philipp Manuel Gutmann

Philipp Manuel Gutmann (*1993) entnimmt „wie ein Parfümeur“ literarischen wie bildnerischen Werken die Essenz, um sie in eine „dramaturgisch eindrucksvoll gestaltete Synthese“ zu übersetzen. In seiner Musik bringt er „die Natur ganz nahe“, „reitet auf Wellen, wirft Rosen in die Fluten oder lauscht dem leisen Atmen der Pflanzen“, wie Kritiken in Presse und Rundfunk hervorheben. 

Der in Niederösterreich geborene Komponist, Musiklektor und Musikwissenschafter studierte an der Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien, der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, der Universität Wien sowie an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Auftragswerke entstanden u. a. für das Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz München (Der kleine Prinz), das Staatstheater Cottbus (Periculum), das Festival Allegro Vivo (Ein wilder Apfelbaum will ich werden), das Land Niederösterreich (Silberne Saiten, Leise atmen alle Blumen) sowie das Ensemble Reconsil (Meeresreiter). 

Gutmann ist Preisträger mehrerer Kompositions- und Kulturpreise, darunter der Kulturpreis des Landes Niederösterreich 2023 und der Kompositionspreis 2022/23 von Allegro Vivo, INÖK, Musikfabrik NÖ und Land NÖ, und erhielt zahlreiche Stipendien, darunter das Österreichische Staatsstipendium für Komposition 2023.

Philipp Manuel Gutmann (*1993) extracts, “like a perfumer,” the essence of literary and visual works in order to transform it into a “dramaturgically compelling synthesis.” In his music, he brings “nature strikingly close,” “rides on waves, casts roses into the floods, or listens to the quiet breathing of plants,” as highlighted by critics in the press and on radio broadcasts. 

Born in Lower Austria, Gutmann studied composition and musicology at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the University of Vienna, and the Zurich University of the Arts. He has received commissions, among others, from the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz Munich (Der kleine Prinz), the Staatstheater Cottbus (Periculum), the Allegro Vivo Festival (Ein wilder Apfelbaum will ich werden), the Province of Lower Austria (Silberne Saiten, Leise atmen alle Blumen), and Ensemble Reconsil (Meeresreiter). 

Gutmann is the recipient of several composition and cultural awards, including the Lower Austria Culture Prize 2023 and the 2022/23 Composition Prize awarded by Allegro Vivo, INÖK, Musikfabrik Lower Austria, and the Province of Lower Austria. He has also received numerous scholarships, among them the Austrian State Scholarship for Composition 2023.
