Biography

Philipp Manuel Gutmann, born in 1993 in Lower Austria, studied composition (MA) and musicology (MA) in Vienna and Zurich at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the University of Vienna, and the Zurich University of the Arts.

His works have been published by the music publishers Doblinger and Kliment as well as the Musikedition NÖ. He has received composition commissions from institutions such as the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich (“Der kleine Prinz”), the Staatstheater Cottbus (“Periculum”), the Allegro Vivo Festival (“Ein wilder Apfelbaum will ich werden”), the state of Lower Austria (“Silberne Saiten”, “Leise atmen alle Blumen”), and Ensemble Reconsil (“Meeresreiter”).

Gutmann is the recipient of the Kulturpreis des Landes Niederösterreich 2023, the 2022/23 Composition Prize from Allegro Vivo, INÖK, Musikfabrik NÖ, and the Cultural Department of Lower Austria, as well as the Composition Competition at the “Tage der neuen Klaviermusik Graz 2021”. Over recent years, he has been awarded numerous scholarships and grants, including the Austrian State Scholarship for Composition in 2023. He lives and works in Vienna as a composer, music and publishing editor, and musicologist.
