Jarmo Sermilä (b. September 16, 1939 in Hämeenlinna) studied musicology at the University of Helsinki (graduating in 1975), and composition in Prague (1972) and with Joonas Kokkonen at the Sibelius Academy (diploma 1975). He was Curator of the house where Sibelius was born 1966-1971, Director of the Finnish Music Information Centre 1971-1976, Artistic Director of the Finnish Broadcasting Company's Experimental Music Studio 1973-79, Provincial Artist for Häme 1977-1982 and Secretary General of the Society of Finnish Composers 1987-1991.

In 1976 Sermilä founded a company called Jasemusiikki publishing both sheet music and records whose Managing Director he has been ever since. He was President of the Finnish section of the ISCM in 1975-1978 and Artistic Director of the Viitasaari Time of Music new music festival in 1987-1999. He has also been employed as a critic, editor and music teacher and has sat on the boards of numerous associations and organisations, such as the Finnish Composers' International Copyright Bureau (Teosto), the Society of Finnish Composers and the Performing Music Promotion Centre (ESEK) as well as a member of Finnish Arts Council's Committee for Music 2001-2004 and ECPN (European Conference of Promoters of New Music) 1999-2002.
