- Peter Maxwell Davies
Canzona (after Giovanni Gabrieli) (1969)
- Chester Music Ltd (World)
Programme Note
Gabrieli's exuberance is straightforwardly relocated here for modern instruments: quintets of wind and strings, which would probably best be well separated in order to make the most of the echo effects between the two groups. Performance by one player to a part is implied by the liveliness, especially for the contributions from flute (which goes high), oboe, clarinet and violins. A bright opener for a professional ensemble, or for a school concert.
