Programme Note
One must imagine the clowns from King Lear (Lear's Fool), As You Like It (Touchstone), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Puck) and Hamlet (Gravedigger) summoned into the person of a single actor in jester's costume. He is sprung into action by a cracked fanfare from trumpets and trombones, then accompanied by a low-life ensemble of ukelele (doubling mandolin) and percussion, the brass sometimes stirring or commiserating with his madness.
