Commissioned by the Education Department of the Norfolk County Council for the Norfolk Youth Orchestra.
In his Robert Kett Overture, Malcolm Arnold returns to the theme of rebellion which inspired his earlier overture Peterloo of 1967. First performed by the Norfolk Youth Orchestra in 1990, the Kett overture pays homage to the rebel leader executed in the mid-sixteenth century for his part in causing the siege of Norwich. Rebel drums, buoyant piccolo and heroic brass co-exist with string music that attains a lushness which would not be out of place in the cinema.
