SYMFONI FOR TI (2022)
(SYMPHONY NO. 4)- Edition Wilhelm Hansen Copenhagen (World)
Programme Note
2nd Movement: The scherzo in my 4th Symphony consists of five duets employing all the ten instruments of the ensemble. The duets can all be played individually, in random order, and in various tempi and dynamics, chosen by the players. Then the duets can be played twofold as quartets or threefold as sextets, it is important of course that all players share the same tempo. Octet might also be tried. The final variation is all 5 duets played at the same time for the first time at a swift tempo, M.M. = ca. 120. A fermata should be placed over the last note in every part in the very last section and kept for a suitable time, loudly!
There shall be no hint of breaks between the sections. They should be played attacca. The players should try to give every duet its own clear identity, do not try to emulate a common style, but give the different combinations of duets their very individuality, and proceed abruptly from one to the next.
It might be quite horrible to try out all duets and combinations in performance, but during rehearsal some characteristic or beautiful or fun combinations might crystallize. Every single new performance should hopefully present a new order of duets and combinations.
