Programme Note

This work, clearly modelled on the Chopin Ballades, was premiered by Martin Roscoe at Alfreton Hall in July 2005, who recorded it on the Dunelm label: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2005/Dec05/Roscoe_DRD0247.htm

It is designed to be attractive to all accomplished pianists with a natural preference for the romantic repertory, borrowing as it does from the 1810-1850 period, but re-heard through ears attuned equally to the piano music of Messiaen and Tippett.
